Project description • Dig/Dug - pts. I & II

DIG/DUG has been conceived as a two-part exhibition that invites seven lens-based artists to consider the dynamic complexity of the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre site. As a site-specific project, it was not artworks that were selected in the curatorial process but artists who had demonstrated in their past work a strong ability to engage a notion of place. Part I features Adam Brickell, Simon Glass and bh Yael while Part II presents Isaac Applebaum, Adrian Fish, Katherine Knight and Arthur Renwick. A diversity of cultural backgrounds, generational perspectives and working methods are brought to bear on the site by these particular artists.

The operative metaphor that the artists were asked to consider is that of archaeology. A central question was whether a functioning building and its grounds could be the subject of a figurative "dig", an activity that we usually associate with the romanticized unearthing of a ruin. This metaphor was suggested by the fragmentary nature of the BJCC as a built form and landscape that have evolved and been altered over the years in response to the changing needs of a community of users. As new functions and corresponding physical structures and alterations appear, other aspects of the building's life recede from memory.

In considering the work of the artists in DIG/DUG and its relationship to the BJCC site, it is worth recalling that Sigmund Freud recognized archaeology as having a kinship with his psychoanalytic theories. He understood that a "dig" is always as much about our present as it is the past. Similarly, the artists who are taking part in DIG/DUG offer interpretive approaches that "discover" layered histories and voices. While inspired by the BJCC site, they ultimately are rooted in the authenticity of their own experience.
