Project description: Wychwood Carbarns

My engagement with the Wychwood Carbarns falls more broadly under the category of community activism. This activism, in the company of many other like-minded individuals was directed at preserving and reusing a set of almost 100 year old streetcar repair garages in the midtown section of Toronto near my home (near Christie St. and St. Clair Ave. W.). It involved the formation of a community organization, Friends of a New Park, whose goal was to see the Barns site (a set of buildings and 3+ acres of land) preserved as a park site offering cultural, environmental and leisure resources to the neighbourhoods around the site - a range of activities lacking otherwise in this part of Toronto.

In 2003 Friends of a New Park was awarded the City of Toronto Community Heritage Award for its work concerning the Barns.

Part of the programme undertaken by Friends of a New Park involved using art to communicate with the larger local community, business owners and politicians about the value of cultural activity and of preserving heritage sites in our urban area - an area that had already lost so much of its architectural history. In this regard two projects we undertook are highlighted on the Wychwood Carbarns pages - Industrial Strength (2002) and an ongoing neighbourhood re-photography project showing some of the heritage losses the area has already sustained. Industrial Strength involved almost 50 photo students from the Ontario College of Art & Design, Ryerson, York University and Sheridan College. They worked in the Barns over the summer of 2002 and their work was displayed in an equal number of St. Clair West storefronts in September 2002.
